Even though it was nearly 6pm, the sun was still relatively high in the sky compared to just the month prior. The days were getting longer and the air was getting warmer. With the heat brought energy--especially in the particular stretch where Teru had asked Mob to meet up. It was in the southeastern district of Seasoning City, an especially dense urban stretch near the freeway bordering on the industrial part of the city.
Factories and and their smokestacks were in the near distance. Workers in uniform were shuffling about with purpose, disappearing in and out of the narrow alleys that snaked through that part of town likes veins. The scent of street food was strong. There was one food stand that Teru asked Mob to wait near in particular, one with especially good yakitori. A gust of wind carried the delicious smokey glazed scent of it--along with laughter and jeers from one of the alleyways just behind Mob.
"Hey, ain't that a Salt uniform?" A boy jeered as his friends formed a loose-but-coordinated semi-circle behind Mob. Their own uniforms were a rusty red with enormously tacky gold buttons down the center.

Date: 2024-01-06 06:01 am (UTC)Mob stopped, then bowed deeply at the collection of bodies in the alleyway. "I'm terribly sorry my little brother hurt you. He lost his temper, that's all." Another bow. "Please look past this and be friends with him." Another bow.

Date: 2024-01-06 06:08 am (UTC)One of the thugs in white groaned and rolled over. "Wait...what'd you say? Are you saying...you're the older brother of that freak show?" He spat as the small boy fretted. He dragged himself back to his feet, suddenly only too happy to jump at the scent of blood in the water. "Think just apologizin' like that is enough to be forgiven, do ya!?
A delinquent from a rival faction joined him in short order. "You need to grovel down on your knees first!"

Date: 2024-01-06 06:15 am (UTC)Mob did not hesitate to comply; he sat one knee down on the ground, and then the other. He bowed so low to the ground that his forehead touched it.

Date: 2024-01-07 03:37 am (UTC)"Only the strongest can give out orders like that." The boy who chimed in was obscured by a mask but his words were sharp and clear.
The towering Miso leader grunted in agreement. "The strongest will rule. That's the way of the world."

Date: 2024-01-07 03:43 am (UTC)"You're exactly right." The man's face was obscured by his purple hoodie; even when Mob turned to see what was going on, he couldn't make out any of the man's features.
"Ritsu!"

Date: 2024-01-07 06:22 am (UTC)Teru was never one to ignore his gut. It was what he was always telling Mob after all. His bad feeling didn't need to get worse for him to heed its warning, but it was, and quickly. He even resorted to calling Mob as he zipped through the city in mid-air if for no other reason than to hear his voice and get a play-by-play--the other boy didn't pick up.
Not good at all.
When he arrived at Marjoram cafe, his feet landed on uneven concrete. There were cracks running through it. The staff at the shops lining the street seemed anxious.
No sign of Mob.
The hair on the back of his neck stood up--there was a distinct electricity in the air. Mob wasn't there, but he wasn't far. The mere feeling he had...it reminded him of that time--
"Hey! Kid! Just who I was looking for!"
Teru's head snapped up, his energy primed and ready to whip out at the voice aimed at him.
"Whoa--whoa! Easy! I'm here to help!" A familiar-looking spirit cowered behind one of the sandwich boards at the sight of his hackles raising.
"...Ah! It's you." Teru squinted to get a better look at him. "Shige's, uh..."
It floated trepidatiously from behind the A-frame, eyebrow raised. "Friend and mentor! That was what you were gonna say, right? Also, wait, Shige? The hell--Argh! Nevermind! Just follow me, okay? Shigeo and Ritsu need backup!"
Without waiting, the ghost zipped down the street. He didn't question it. Without waiting, Teru darted off after it, heedless of who or what he spooked. The closer they got, the stronger the sensation. Even if he wasn't getting sensitive to Mob's presence, he couldn't have missed the spikes of energy making the air crackle in a way he couldn't have described to anyone who wasn't sensitive to it.
When he turned the corner, he saw it. Someone had just been beaten to the ground--it wasn't Mob.
Mob was already on the ground.
And the one looming above them was--
Teru's brain didn't need any more time to process what he was seeing. It was unnecessary confirmation for what he had been sensing this whole time. But seeing--there was a cold fire that was lit in him that had never burned so intensely.
Energy gathered in his whole body and focused on his hand. He was still himself enough not to cause unnecessary collateral even with the sea of cowering rivals in front of him, fully ignorant to his presence. He didn't give the enemy the dignity of warning. Rebar tore itself from the building beside him, one end of the heavy metal driven to an angled point, and it shot with sniper-precision and bullet-speed right at the man's head--

Date: 2024-01-07 06:38 am (UTC)Koyama stared down at the ear for a second, not quite comprehending what was laying there beside him. But when he did, rage tore through him.
"I'm going to kill you!" He lunged at the new blonde kid, his fists pulsing even brighter with purple-pink psychic energy. He'd gone hard with the little bowlcut kid, but he was going even harder with the blonde one.

Date: 2024-01-07 06:59 am (UTC)The delinquents dove out of the way of the oncoming rampage and Teru weaved to dodge--and he was right to do it. The man's fists tore through his barrier like tissue. He didn't dodge completely unscathed, though--his left shoulder had taken a glancing hit. Even if the adrenaline was keeping him moving and focused, he could tell by the sudden numbness that even a glancing blow was potentially debilitating. He flex his arm--he could still move it, not dislocated--but he didn't have time to do more before he was on the defense again as the man continued his relentless attack.

Date: 2024-01-07 07:18 am (UTC)Mob's eyes opened, red and bright and fierce. "...Can you feel it? Rage burning in me."
100%.
Despite the rage, Mob gazed out at him blankly as his psychic energy drove the man so deep into the ground that a crater formed around him. Even in this state, he managed to keep enough composure to ensure that Teru wasn't sucked into it alongside him.
"I'm sorry I wasn't where I said I'd be," he said to Teru.
Then he threw his hand out and pulled the psychic towards him with the same level of suction a vacuum might have on a dust mote.

Date: 2024-01-07 07:35 am (UTC)"Shige..." He had been fully prepared to handle the enemy himself, but it wasn't necessary.
'Again. Someone had really managed to push you over the edge like this.'
Teru should have been frightened, especially because he had lived that terror on the receiving end already, but he wasn't. He should have felt triumphant knowing the fight was as good as over, but he didn't. He felt good hurting the man, but suddenly nothing about this felt good.
Then, suddenly, Mob crushing the man through the concrete wall, his grip still on his face like a vice. Whatever he was saying to him made the man's eyes bug out even further. Before Teru could even blink, they had shot up into the sky and were as small as stars--
"Shige!"
"That guy's finished," Ritsu cough from somewhere nearby, still unable to drag himself up from the debris. "It's over."

Date: 2024-01-08 01:01 am (UTC)They were up in the sky a sudden time, a brilliant ball of orange psychic energy that Tome probably would have believed was of extraterrestrial origin surrounding them. The scarred man attempted to hit Mob with the same attack as before, but it bounced helplessly against his shield.
Mob hated flying with his psychic power, but the nausea didn't even register as he sped towards the ground, the man's face still clenched in his hand. They piledrove through a skyscraper with frightening ease as the building windows shattered, sending a rain of glass below.
Mob let go of the man's face and stood; he laid helplessly in a crater, his eyes open but rolled back in his head. Mob walked out of a hole in the side of the building just to hear the scattered murmurs of the gang members who his brother had terrorized only a few short minutes before.
But then, the scarred man appeared again, seemingly out of nowhere and swung an arm to clothesline him with a psychic strike. Mob was pushed backwards by the force of the swing, but still managed to maintain his footing.
His Gakuran, however, wasn't so lucky. What remained of it was tattered beyond recognition. The white t-shirt he wore beneath it was on full display.
"You should grab your ear and leave while you still can. If you try attacking me again, you won't be so lucky."

“Shige! Just end it! Don’t give him the chance!”

Date: 2024-01-08 02:35 am (UTC)"Watch out! He's got a knife!"
The man lunged out towards him and Mob responded in turn, a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors forming a domed barrier around him.
"If you're not going to give it up, I'm going to end it. The next move will be the last."
The knife struck the barrier, but didn't come close to penetrating it. Waves of psychic energy rippled over Mob's barrier as the teenager stood impassively as the other man began to scream.
"My knife's not even going to scratch it!"
But then the scarred man grinned wickedly and pulled something from his pocket. He raised it, sending a spray of something directly in Mob's face.
Mob collapsed, just as another form descended behind him.
"Koyama," the man in the black suit said cooly. "I thought you said you could handle this." Koyama spun around, the rage registering on his face. "You appear to have lost an ear."
"I am handling it!" Koyama snarled.

Date: 2024-01-08 03:05 am (UTC)The second one met Teru's eyes. His hand went somewhere. Teru was back on the defensive and--
FWOOSH
Teru twisted his body and there was suddenly blood in his vision--his own. He couldn't see anything. There was dust and debris filling his nose and his mouth--whatever the second one had done had kicked up a thick shroud of it. He couldn't see and he could barely breathe. Pain was spreading out from his cheek--he had gotten wounded somewhere there, but he didn't know how badly.
'Don't panic. Don't panic.' He told himself over and over. Even if he couldn't see, he could still sense. He reminded himself of that and and held onto trust in himself because there was nothing else to do. He could feel it--he could feel Mob. He reached out his hand and willed his friend to him. Mob's body collided with his and Teru grappled him for dear life. He was dead weight in his arms, but he was alive.
FWOOSH
One of the buildings groaned loudly above them. There was even more screaming from the other kids. Teru resisted the urge to just get himself and Mob to cover as quickly as possible--he should have done a lot of things that day, but there was one more thing he could do. He still knew which way was which, unlike the others--he thrust out his hand and blew the crowd of them into the street just in time for them to avoid being crushed by the building collapsing on them all in a heap.
--
Koyama hoisted the brat--Shigeo Kageyama, whatever the hell his name was--onto his shoulder. All the others had cleared out. He spat onto the pile of rubble. He couldn't sense any of them anymore. He could only hope they'd been crushed like good little whelps.
"I've secured the others from the Awakening Lab," Sakurai couldn't fully keep the contempt out of his voice as he said it. "This was messy. Division Leader Ishiguro won't be happy."
"You don't have to tell me that!" Koyama roared.
Unfazed, Sakura sheathed his sword. "Gather your ear. If we're quick they can staple it back on at headquarters."
"Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Grabbed it before you buried it, frickin' Four-Eyes..."
